my "inner child"

Come see "Inner Child" the selective children illustrations & imaginative works of Sey Studios this Friday from 6pm - 10pm Josh & Monica's Studio during the Fullerton Art WalkIt is going to be a lot of fun and the perfect time to meet the artist and maybe shop unique and handmade for the holidays! Yes, I will be there selling owl-naments, prints and other goodies too! Also, be sure to drop by over 30 other galleries to check out even more amazing artwork!

Concept illustration from my "Maria's Family" children's book... before I knew it was going to be about a little Romanian girl instead of doing a traditional Romanian fairy tale.

Also, for this week's Illustration Friday theme of "round", I finally finished my digital version of my "One of a Kind" owls piece. I will be selling first run artist signed prints at the art walk! Stop by and get your own or one as a gift. They are unique cute, and of course full of owls.

For those who cannot make the Art Walk and want a piece, you can purchase one from my Etsy store but you must act fast because they are selling fast!

New York!

Guess what I just found out?

Dear Ashleymarie ,

On behalf of Team Coco and TBS, we would like to extend a well-deserved congratulations on being selected as one of the fine artists of the NYCOCO MoCA Gallery! We have selected your piece, Conan the Great Entertainer to be featured in our gallery. As you may or may not already know, the gallery will be located at the world-famous Time Warner Center in New York City from October 24th-November 3rd - which is right around the corner!!

Woohoo! I'm beyond elated! Talk about unexpected! Life just keeps popping up with more surprises everyday! I wonder what shall come next! I will be sure to update with any more information I should receive about this event!

Also, another gallery show around the corner!!! I made it into the Zombie Art Show for the Long Beach Zombie Walk. The show will be held at The Phonebooth Gallery.

In other news, I was recently interviewed by the OC Register. Check out the article here!
DISCLAIMER OF ERROR: I am not a "former Disneyland guide" like it says. I am the artist who created the paper cut sculpture of one! ♥ Of you are interested in one please email me for more information!

Disneyland Tour Guide

Completed and delivered to a very happy client.

First paper cut done without paint. I really prefer the 'pure' look the paper gives. Perhaps one day she will get a boyfriend to hang out with her.

Long time gone

Been gone awhile from the online scene. With Pepper now attached to my hip rather than in my belly, things have definitely changed and so has my time. Somehow in the middle of all this love and chaos I found time for some creativity (it bumped sleep out of the schedule, but I could not help myself).

Illustrated this September's Reader's Choice Awards cover of parenting OC magazine. You can find it free at most Orange County locations. Pick one up today! Or read the digital version on their website!

I am now working on finishing up a paper cut for a client and a portrait for another. Lining up future gallery shows and some where in the middle of all that, planning and preparing for my solo show next November. I don't know how I will do it, but I will find a way.

Here is a sneak peek at the paper cut I've been slowly cutting away at (it is hard to find time to safely cut with a newborn at your side).

Illustration Friday - "Swell"

This entry for this week's Illustration Friday is later than I had hoped but not without a good reason. First week home with our newborn so time to create art has been non-existant because this little masterpiece needs more attention and care than most. :) But she's a cutie pie.

In honor of her birth, I decided to do a pregnant mermaid swollen with merbaby. :)

Enjoy!

Illustration Friday - "Imperfect"

Original for sale on www.seystudios.etsy.com!
My illustration for this week's theme "imperfect". I had absolutely no idea what to draw, and then one of my friends suggested owls. I have never drawn them in my life, but after looking up reference photos (oh my goodness, baby owls are the cutest), I figured out what I wanted to do. The coloring took a bit longer than I thought. So many color studies...

These are only a few of the studies.
Ugh! The one thing I wish I had right now was a larger scanner! I had to take the photos using my web cam since the piece itself was 3 inches to long to scan correctly. However, besides that snafu... I love what I was able to create this week. I did not think I would have time, but it turns out my belly monster wants to be in my belly a bit longer than the expected due date, so I'll take the extra time!

Having fun creating cuteness!

Awake and alert

I sit and type here tonight with a dancing baby in my belly. Yes, she's still in there. Taking her sweet ole time. So while I wait for her to make up her mind on when she'll come out, I've been working on getting all my stuff in a row.

The counting book has been set a side as I put together a paper cut for a very lucky and sweet tour guide. I procured another commission just tonight for a children's character portrait, which is going to be so much fun because it is going to be a little boy in a monkey costume! Ah! I am overwhelmed with cuteness! Finished my friend's tattoo design of a Tardis (photos will be posted eventually when she gets the tattoo done so I can show you the before and after).

Working on a weird sleep schedule since my little belly monster doesn't like sleeping anymore. Dancing on my ribs is apparently way more fun than dream cycles.

So since I am up, being kicked and snuggled with, I finished updating my member profile for The Foundry, a local art gallery from my hometown. Next year, I will be exhibiting a solo show in November focused on my children's illustration. I am super excited about this endeavor and have been making my Illustration Friday pieces focus on children's book artwork for the show next year. I cannot tell you how happy I am to be given this opportunity.

With that, I must make haste and work on these projects!

Sey

Dazzled by Zazzle

Decided to open a Zazzle store, which means you can now get exclusive merch items with my art on it. I only have a few things up at the moment, but it is a new venture I figured I would try since people ask for shirts, stickers, stationary and other products. Now it is time!

The next items I do want to get up there are the Happy Housewives. <3

Illustration Friday - "Obsession"

I tried to do a boy theme, but ended up drawing a little girl in a bat costume. I think I have my baby girl on my brain. She still is holding out before she makes her appearance, but in the mean time I am distracting myself with artwork.

I just loved the whimsy of this piece. Created in 2 hours. I think I really am digging my sketchy and messy color look. Seems more playful and light hearted.

Why bats? Because I love them! I am so happy where we live because once night falls, you can hear the bats come out to play and echo to find their way around. It was really cute at the beginning of spring because you could hear baby bats trying to figure out their way around with their voice. I cannot get enough of them.

False Alarm

Dear Illustration Friday, I was so anxious to see what this next theme is that I got up early to check. Then I realized it was only Thursday. :( One more day to go.

Yesterday we also had a false alarm on the labor. Boo! I want to see my baby. lol Oh well. In the mean time I will distract myself with art (its creation and admiration).

Soup's on!

In spite of the time crunch, and the fact I want to finish more art projects than I really have time for, I still manage to make my way in the kitchen and try something new. Today my heart and tummy both were screaming for minestrone soup. Now, I've never cooked this in my life and so I spent an hour looking through my recipe books and then online to find the perfect one. However, there were no such thing, so I took the main idea of them all and made my own version.

My homemade-toss-in-what-Sey-wants-minestrone soup! Nom!
The best part is it came out incredibly tasty and exactly what I was craving. Now I have tons of leftovers which makes both me, and baby Pepper Lily happy. Still no news on her coming out any time soon... which is nice for me because I have more time to finish my art, but not so nice because I do want her out eventually. I can feel her squirming a lot now since her space is becoming more and more cramped. Guess I need to do more walking. :)

I was able to finish a few more illustrations for the counting book. I need to put that down for the moment and finish the portrait, which is nearly complete. I just need to crank it out and get it done because that one has more of a deadline (wedding and all) than the book.

The count down begins!

What perfect timing! This weeks theme from Illustration Friday is "gesture" and I have been working on completing our counting book and just happened to fall in this week's theme.

My goal is to have everything all completed and put together and ready for printing by the end of the month! Get ready to learn how to count evilly!

Disneyland & San Diego Comic Con

Finally found a medium that I am happy with for the counting book... so my goal is to finish that in the next couple days (if not by the end of the month). I know... I know. I have been saying it would be done since last year, but baby delayed that due to sickness. Just hoping she stays in long enough so I can finish it. Thankfully everything is drawn out, I just need to paint them. Well everything but one panel. My husband, the author, has been so kinda and sweet during this entire time of pregnancy. I'm so grateful to have a man like him in my life. Nearly done with the wedding portrait. Coming out great!

We took a break on Sunday for just ourselves. He took me to Disneyland for the day and I stuck it out walking the entire time! No wheelchair! I was very happy and proud of that. Kept hydrated and rested but we did a few miles, which is awesome for myself and the belly monster. Finally got to experience The Little Mermaid ride (loved it)! We also partook in the Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Star Tours (the cue just for me, but totally worth it), Soundsational Parade (gorgeous, I cried) and the Mary Blair exhibit. Talk about a busy day! Then on top of it all, my parents came down for a surprise visit and we had dinner with them. I was so happy. Just a pleasant day that was much needed.

Hope everyone else is having a wonderful summer! Thank you all for the favorites and adds! I will do my best to update with one or two illustrations from the counting book before my baby makes her debut. Less than 3 weeks left (for her). Definitely missing out on the San Diego Comic Con this year. I know! What timing on my part? lol So have fun for me out there!

Sincerely,
Sey

Children's book - Counting

Gave myself a deadline of 4 days to complete this counting book I've been trying to finish illustrating for the last year... if not 4 days then the end of the month, but the happy deadline would be 4 days. Here are some process photos of my endeavor.

At my desk.
I forgot how much time it took to set up for gouache.

But the end result is so rewarding!

I cannot wait until it is all complete! I finally found a medium that works! I have only changed it 4 times (watercolor, digital, paper cut and now gouache). I have a funny feeling this number is out to haunt me.

This time am just the illustrator. My husband, Kevin S. Lively, is the author.

More to come!

EcoArt that will leave your mouth watering!

"Cupcake Minions"

Finished! Now looking for a good home! Inspired by all those cupcake lovers out there. Also drawn for this weeks Illustration Friday's theme of "remedy". Sometimes the best remedy for sadness is something sweet. <3

Sweet tooth

Did some cleaning around the studio and found this one piece I drew a long time ago. Giving it some color before I call it complete.

Cleaning

While cleaning out my photo files, I stumbled upon this. It is a progress photo of all the steps and planning it takes to create a portrait. ♥ This is the one I did for Kaydence last year.

Well back to cleaning out the harddrive. I really should never wait this long to do so.

Jealous?

I got to draw pin up model Mosh Fredsaft at Dr. Sketchy's on the Queen Mary during Ink-N-Iron today! This is not my sketch. In fact, I did not like either of them, but I did photograph one of the poses she did and really loved it so much, I just had to share.
Mosh
The festival was a ton of fun. Full of inspiration and fun. I am so glad I went! Escorted my date, Janet Vice of the South County Derby Girls, to the event too. Had too much fun in the sun, but it was worth every bit of the burn.

Below is a quick photo of what I've been working on for the "Forest, fairies and mulberries" show this coming weekend. She still needs some color, but she's nearly complete.

Dance for me

I wish I could type more, but sleep has eluded me for so long and I'm beat. So here is another photo update.

Lining my Rosie the Riveter inspired pin up for a burlesque poster.
Edit: update on the coloring process. :) I made her look like a tatt! <3 Simple but very happy with how it is coming out.

Happy Mother's Day!

Hope your Mother's Day is out of this world!

In honor of today, I decided to start off a bit more domestic. :-p Homemade cinnamon waffles with blackberries on top! Sounds good, huh? It was. My wee one particularly enjoyed it. I'm really getting a kick out of all these homemade meals. Sure is cheeper and tastes so much better than eating out.

Now that I'm energized and ready for the day... I'm going to be working on two commissions...

...and a t-shirt for Friday's Back Luck Bout at the Spruce Goose Dome in Long Beach! Here's a shot of the primed area. Might add a phrase on it after I finish the image.

I'm so excited! I have never seen a banked track game in person! Only the regular derby bouts. Going with one of my coolest friends ever, Alyssandra Nighswonger. She is going to be singing the national anthem to start the game! How awesome is that?

Well, I better get started! I need to finish two commissions and that shirt. I'm really in an artsy mood today, which is wonderful because my honey doesn't get home from work until later, so I have all the time to devote to art (and some to devote to laundry).

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! I will be selling wares at today's Farmers & Craft Market in Downtown Anaheim on Promenade Street from 12am-7pm.

Adopt a Fat & Happy Unicorn!

He's looking for a home full of love and wonder.

"Fat & Happy Unicorn" original

Will you be his new mommy? Fill out the adoption papers today by visiting www.seystudios.etsy.com!

Also, I posted my Lovely Lisa piece onto Etsy since it did not sell for the Gallery Nucleus auction. However, they did raise over $3,000 for the give2asia charity to help those in Japan (thanks to all those who donated). I will be donating proceeds of her sale to another charity of choice.

Food: The art of meal and snack time

I never thought I would miss it, but I did. Being away from the kitchen so long really has made it difficult. Not that Pepper Lily started my long vacation from it. Really, that whole thing started once I started a full-time job and trying to juggle my art and personal life.

Now, working from home has made it easier to get back into the kitchen scene. And I'm actually having fun! There has been so much I've forgotten that I'm learning all over again. Thankfully, everything that has been created has turned out great. I didn't think about photographing it until now, which makes me somewhat sad because I made some awesome things! But let's start off simple first.

Grilled cheese and fresh orange slices.

This is not my usual breakfast, but it sounded amazing! Perhaps it is the pregnancy cravings, but it was a lovely simple treat that I created from scratch. While looking for places to vend, I have been frequenting all the local farmer's markets the past few weeks. The oranges photographed above were from one such market, particularly the Downtown Anaheim Farmer's Market. Best and juiciest oranges I have tasted in such a long time. I bought a few from a regular supermarket a few weeks back and they were so dry. Not exactly the thing you want in an orange.

In an effort to document my progress through learning the art of cooking and baking again, I will be doing so here. This is still my art blog, but this is my side art project, which I am really happy to share. Bobby Chiu, a fantastic artist of Imaginism Studios, has been writing in his journal little tips for artistic inspiration. One particular blurb included to get out of the old routine and try something new. Every experience in an artist's life only enhances his/her work. So here is my new project. <3 Here's my something new.

Banana chocolate chip cookies (from scratch)

And in trying something new, I wanted to expand on my memory of baking cookies, so I tackled a new recipe I've never done in my life. Banana chocolate chip cookies sounded so good, and I had 3 ripe bananas (riper the better). And this is what I created. Best cookies ever! No store or bakery can make homemade tasting cookies.

So here's to trying new things and eating them along the way.

Next post: The Fat & Happy Unicorn needs to find a home.

New beginnings of progress

It's official. I am now am focusing on my art, being a wife and preparing our nest for our little Pepper Lily. My day job now consists of cooking, cleaning and crafting.

As a way to start fresh, I've redesigned my blog layout with something more me and a bit more retro. I have also been working on commissions like crazy (including a tattoo design, logo and a portrait of a renaissance princess). Last week, I started this painting on a piece of wood for my own self, and still am in the process of finishing it.

Progress of the fat & happy unicorn.

I love him. Hope you do too. Until then, here's to dreaming!

Shows & Openings

Going to support my old alma mater by checking out this year's batch of California State University of Long Beach's BFA Illustration/Animation works! Check it out!

One future show to keep in mind is the "Art for Japan" exhibition to be held at Gallery Nucleus. The opening reception will be held on April 23rd. The online auction will begin on April 20th and end the 25th. Selected works will go up and be displayed in the gallery for the opening. I've donated my paper sculpture "Lovely Lisa" to the auction. I feel Lisa would have liked that. <3 All proceeds will go to the give2asia organization which is led by Dice Tsunami, art director of Pixar.

A big thank you...

... to everyone who came out to The Pink Parlour Festival yesterday! And to my awesome husband who assisted me at the booth. I could not have done the event without his help! Seriously!

You all made it worth wild! I definitely want to do this again next year that is for sure. Great venue, fun crowd, and tons and tons of hairstyles, outfits and decor to drool over. I just can't get enough pin up and rockabilly into my life. Next year, I will have to devote a portion of my time to check out the car show that was in the middle of the race track while the ponies were going! And to see more of the performers on the main stage (i.e. the Atomic Cherry Bombs, etc.)

Some photos I was able to snap on my phone (I completely was in the moment and didn't take but 4 with my regular camera, and I fail for not taking more).

My incredible hubby and adorable self.

The Sey Studios table (we were #22, my favorite number)

Blankets with giraffe print! They weren't exactly what I wanted, but cute never the less!

Baby nessie felt creation I bought for belly monster. <3

Little girl toddler rockabilly skirts that I really wanted to get. But I shall wait.

UPDATE!!
Look at what you missed!

There were a ton of vendors selling fascinators but nothing like these cute hats! <3

I bought Baby Nessie from them. <3 Hand stitched!

The booth across the way from us who had the sweetest people there! Definitely made some friends. <3
